Top 3 Ways for Memorising your Lessons ---- From an Online Math Tutor

The article that I am going to write now has very little connection with the field that I am tutoring in, Math. This article focuses on memorisation of lessons. Mathematics requires less memorisation. Math is all about logical thinking and calculations. The only things that you may have to memorise in Math are the Algebraic and the Trigonometric formulas and some Geometry theorems.

But then, the obvious questions that would occur to one’s mind are -------

‘Why have I chosen this topic for my blog post?’

‘Do I have sufficient knowledge to say something in this field?’

I do not know whether I have sufficient knowledge to compose something in this area or not, but I do have some experiences, which I thought of sharing with you. I would think my writing worthwhile if any of you benefit from this. I possess a very poor memorising power. Then how did I manage to recall my lessons while I was in school?

Let us split up our entire syllabus (consisting of every field of study in our curriculum) into three subdivisions.

The first segment is the poetry section which is the smallest of all parts.

If one line ends with the word ‘sing’ and since you have read the poem before, you would automatically remember the rhyming word (may be ‘ring’, ‘king’, ‘wing’ or any other). Then you would invariably try to recollect the other words, of the sentence, which, when prefixed to the rhyming word would give a meaning to the sentence. In this instance, you receive some clue as to what may be the next line and so, it is most comfortable to recall.

Our next segment is a section which contains information that can be tabulated.

For example, Difference between a real image and a virtual image

Or Factors influencing the climate of a region.

For this section, if the information given in your book is in the form of a table or a list, you do not have to do anything, else you have to make the corresponding table or a list in your notebook. This will aid in your memorisation process.

The final segment consists of descriptive answers.

It may be the description of different enzymes and their functions in human digestive system.

Or Narration of some event in which you were missing, like a description of some historical issue. ----- Hardest to remember.

For this section, you can underline or bracket the sentences of your book that are relevant and you bid to remember for an answer or else you can write them down in your notebook. This is a laborious method, but is quite effective because you tend to remember a few points unknowingly as you write them.

Now, you are done with the preparation stage.

Next comes the memorisation phase. Once more, you can memorise in three different ways.

1. You go through a particular content, made in the preparation stage, twice or thrice slowly and carefully. Next, ask your friend or any of your family members to check how much you remember. Give them the content that you have prepared, and speak out whatever you have learnt so that they may point out the portions that you have forgotten and skipped. Go through your forgotten portions once more carefully. Repeat the process until you have memorised your lesson fully. Do not get afraid, because you would not have to repeat the process for many number of times. You will find that you remember things quite easily. This method is best suited for group learning.

2. You go through the prepared contents twice or thrice carefully and then write them in your notebook. After finishing your writing, tally it with your previously prepared content to see the areas which you have forgotten. Go through these portions again and then repeat the procedure. I have witnessed many students adopting this technique of memorisation. It is a good method, but is extremely time consuming and laborious. Hence, I would never recommend this method.

3. As earlier, you run through the contents slowly and carefully twice or thrice. Next, close your eyes and attempt to visualise the page of your book or notebook with the lines composed on it. I know, this may appear to be nonsensical to most of you, but I promise you that this is the best method. This process of visualisation will be difficult at the start, but with practice, you will discover that you are being able to see every word of every line of the marked portions of your book, the colour of your underlines and every other detail. You will be able to cheat from your book (because the book is in your memory) during the time of the examination and no one will be able to catch you.

The third method is the best method for self-learning. How much can you write? Is it practicable to write the contents of all the subjects and revise? Let us say you want to become a doctor. You have to learn the Human Anatomy, Physiology, Medicine, Surgery and so many other subjects. Can you imagine writing all of them in order to learn them? It is just an idiotic suggestion. The writing technique for memorisation of lessons is applicable only for the lower classes.
