Question:

I did not care to study Math in my early school days. Today, I am a mature student and realise that my basics in Math are extremely weak. I want to continue with Math even in my +2 level. From where should I begin now? (The question asked to me by a student)

Answer:

(I am writing a universal reply to the above question so that this may be helpful for every student who is confronting a similar problem.)

You have already taken the first step since you have realised your mistake and are wanting to make amendments. I truly commend you for that. Since you plan to continue with Math in your +2 level, I am presuming that your aim is to attain reasonably good scores in Math.

You can build a strong base in Mathematics through self-studying. There are many authentic books in Math which have numerous solved examples. You can try them. You can get them offline, in a bookshop or you can purchase them online through Amazon www.amazon.com or www.amazon.in. You can have their Kindle editions as well, which will be cheaper than the hard copies of the books. You can get explanations of different topics on Mathematics by listening to the Khan Academy YouTube videos. www.youtube.com/user/khanacademy

But self-studies will be more time consuming as compared to the time that will be required if you take the help of some guide, perhaps a tutor (online or offline).

For either of the two cases, you have to first determine the level up to which you are confident, your concept is crystal clear. You have to start from the very next level. The determination of your grade of knowledge can be best evaluated by a professional person (tutor) than yourself. It may be from class 9 or it may be from class 7 as well. You have to develop a clear concept of the previous Math topics in order to proceed further since Math is all about understanding. Thus, it is absolutely essential to assess your current position and you have to start from that point. Do not feel depressed to start learning from lower classes because this time, you will be learning sincerely and when you come back to your present class, you will be delighted to find that you are one of the best students in your class.

Remember to practice Math every day. Just like you eat and sleep each day, you should ‘Math’ every single day. Math is all about practice with a thorough understanding about the topic.
